Introducing the 2024–2025 Chief Residents in Quality and Safety at the Atlanta VA

We are excited to announce the 2024–2025 academic year Quality and Safety Chief Residents at the Atlanta VA for the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program! Drs. Aaron Scott Gillet and Tucker Pope will be leading residents at the VA in patient safety and quality curricula as well as mentoring residents with an interest in QI. Both physicians have already proven to be highly dedicated medical educators with an affinity for improving the quality and safety of health care for our nation’s veterans.

Dr. Aaron Scott Gillet is a New Jersey native and current resident in the Internal Medicine residency program at Emory. He came here after completing a combined MD/MBA program at Tulane University. He has a strong background to quality and safety dating back to his time as a medical student with projects ranging from effective handoffs to as a resident improving the VA’s new transitional care clinic’s patient inclusion process. Furthermore, he has been on multiple patient safety committees during his time as a resident. His MBA positions him well for opportunities to engage with hospital leadership in a meaningful way. Dr. Gillet is also a committed researcher who won the STAR Research Silver Medal Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine in 2022. His research and academic interests have been on display via several poster presentations and publications. We are excited to have him share his expertise in research and healthcare leadership!

Dr. Tucker Pope is a current resident in the Internal Medicine residency program at Emory University. Before coming to Atlanta he completed all of his education in the state of Texas. There, he received both an MD and Master of Health Care Transformation at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. During his time in medical school, he was involved in a variety of projects including improving education to families during the COVID-19 pandemic to piloting student order entry. His work in the Quality Improvement Distinctions Program conveys his dedication to effecting change in the healthcare setting. The background he gained from his master’s degree will be an invaluable asset to data analysis for ongoing QI initiatives at the VA. Dr. Pope is well respected by his peers, having been recognized with the “Golden Stethoscope” award this past spring. We are excited to have his extensive understanding of systems-based practice!

The Atlanta VA Health Care System is fortunate they have all decided to join us and we look forward to a great year working with them. Please join us in congratulating both of these well-deserving physicians!

As a reminder, these are the 2023-2024 Quality and Safety Chief Residents for the Atlanta VA who will assume their positions this July and were announced last year.
