DOM Staff Spotlight: Melanie V. Elder

Our next DOM Staff Spotlight is Melanie V. Elder, Sr. Program Coordinator, Renal Division, Nephrology Fellowship Coordinator. Learn more about our colleague below!

Tell us about yourself. Where are you from?
I’m the youngest of three. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts but raised in Annapolis Maryland.

What is your professional background?
I have worked in banking, finance, commercial real estate, and restaurant industries within human resources, training and development, quality development, and marketing.

What is your role at Emory?
As the Sr. Program Coordinator for the Renal Division. I manage both the general nephrology fellowship and renal transplant training programs, our NIH SUPERR summer research training program, our NIH ATLANTIS U2C-TL1 training grant, NIH STEP-UP summer students, visiting elective residents, and international students.

How long have you worked in the Department of Medicine?
I started with Emory in 2006 so that makes 17 years with the DOM.  I started in the Cardiology Division as an Administrative Assistant and was there for several years and then moved to my current division as a fellowship coordinator.

What are you currently working on? Any upcoming projects?
I am very excited that we just received notification that our third renewal for our SUPERR summer grant was funded.  We are also planning our first-ever ATLANTIS U2C-TL1 training symposium for Spring 2024.

What do you like to do for fun outside of work?

I like doing community service work through my church–that keeps me busy during my off time. I also love listening to music, candle making, and crafting.
