Oindrila Rahaman
Post-Doctoral Fellow – Rheumatology

What is your professional background?
I am an immunologist by profession, and I graduated with a PhD from India. I joined Emory University as a postdoctoral fellow in 2020 during the pandemic and this is my first experience as a part of postdoctoral training. Since 2013, my research background has been understanding the cellular and molecular basis for immunological dysfunction in human autoimmune diseases like lupus.

Which division do you work in? Who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Rheumatology, under the mentorship of Dr. Ignacio Sanz.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
Our current research direction involves identifying critical molecular signatures of B lymphocyte dysfunction responsible for human autoimmune diseases like lupus. B lymphocytes are primarily responsible for lupus pathogenesis and our research will help uncover key targets on pathogenic B lymphocytes which can be targeted for efficient treatment of this disorder.

What do you like most about Emory?
This is my first work experience in the U.S., and I love the energy, warmth, and multicultural vibe of the University. The team of highly dedicated clinicians and collaborators puts a robust system in place and ensures that we get human samples for meaningful research on human diseases.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
My favorite movie is Forrest Gump and my all-time favorite TV shows are Friends and Game of Thrones.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
My recent activities have been trying to learn to play the guitar and developing a proficiency in the Spanish language.

What is a fun fact about you?
I am a total Potterhead, and I still secretly wish that Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry existed somewhere in the real world so that I can be admitted!
