David S. Stephens, MD, returns as chair of the Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce that David S. Stephens, MD, has returned as chair of the Department of Medicine. Dr. Stephens has stepped down as the interim executive vice president of health affairs as Ravi I. Thadhani, MD, MPH, began his new role on Jan. 1 as Emory’s next executive vice president for health affairs, executive director of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center, and vice chair of the Emory Healthcare Board of Directors. Please join us in welcoming back Dr. Stephens to this vital leadership role for the Department of Medicine.

Dr. Stephens joined the Department of Medicine faculty in 1982 and was named director of the Division of Infectious Diseases in 1992, a position he held for 21 years. In addition to chairing the Department of Medicine, he is also the vice president for research for the Woodruff Health Sciences Center and currently serves as the Stephen W. Schwarzmann Distinguished Professor of Medicine and is also a professor of microbiology and immunology in the School of Medicine and professor of epidemiology in Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health. Dr. Stephens previously served as interim dean of the School of Medicine from 2016 to 2017.

While Dr. Stephens served as interim executive vice president of health affairs, W. Robert Taylor, MD, PhD, Marcus Chair in Vascular Medicine, executive vice chair of the Department of Medicine, and director of the Division of Cardiology, was appointed interim chair of the Department of Medicine.
