David Schulman, MD, MPH, to serve as president of the American College of Chest Physicians

The Department of Medicine is proud to share that David Schulman, MD, MPH, professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, will serve as president of the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) beginning in October 2021. In his new role, Dr. Schulman will lead the largest organization of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine professionals in North America. He currently serves as president-elect.

Dr. Schulman is a pulmonologist and sleep medicine physician with an extensive background in education and educational administration. For 14 years, he directed Emory’s pulmonary and critical care fellowship program, but recently stepped down to take on the role of director of the School of Medicine’s preclinical foundations curriculum. His primary area of academic interest is on faculty development and research in the domains of teaching effectiveness and assessment.

Dr. Schulman has been the recipient of numerous institutional teaching awards, including the Fellows Teaching Award from the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Emory, two Golden Apple Awards for Teaching from Emory’s J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program, and the Dean’s Teaching Award from the School of Medicine. Extramurally, his work in education has been recognized with a Fellowship Innovation Award from the American Thoracic Society, the Outstanding Educator Award from the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors (APCCMPD), and the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

“I have been involved in the leadership structure of CHEST for more than a decade,” said Dr. Schulman. “This October, I will have the pleasure of being inducted as its 84th president. As much as I’ve loved my work with Emory, my work with the College has afforded me opportunities to network with colleagues both within and outside of the US; to serve as a mentor to the next generation of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep physicians; and to develop educational programming for physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other professionals who work in our clinical environments.”

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Schulman on this fantastic accomplishment!
