Medicine Grand Rounds 3/13: A Conversation with the Nation’s Chief Flu Fighter

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this year’s flu season is the most severe since the swine flu pandemic of 2009. So far, it has accounted for more than 1,800 hospitalizations in the metro Atlanta area and 79 deaths in Georgia alone. Please join the Emory Department of Medicine for a Grand Rounds discussion with the nation’s chief flu fighter Daniel Jernigan, MD, MPH (CAPT, USPHS) on Tuesday, March 13 from noon – 1 p.m. in the Emory University Hospital auditorium (2E).

When it comes to respiratory disease investigations, Jernigan loves the hunt. Like an expert tracker, the seasoned epidemiologist asks “Who’s falling ill? Is there a cluster of cases? What relationship do the patients have with each other?” As director of CDC’s Influenza Division, Jernigan is constantly working to prepare for the next influenza pandemic. He believes the answers are out there if we know how to look for them. “We are determined to intervene where we can and stop the spread of disease—that’s public health,” he says.

This event is free and open to the public. Remote viewing is available at the following locations:

  • Emory University Hospital Midtown (5th Floor MOT, Classroom 4)
  • Grady (FOB 101)
  • Atlanta VA Medical Center (6th Floor Corner Conference Room)
