Highlighted Researcher: Akihiro Kuma

What is your professional background? 
I graduated from the University of Occupational and Environmental Health (UOEH) in Japan, and there I received my MD.  I trained in Nephrology at Hospital of UOEH.  I also trained for molecular biology at UOEH, and there I received my PhD.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor? 
I work in the Renal Division under Jeff Sands and Janet Klein.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important? 
I research the physiology of urea transporters (UT) in chronic kidney disease.  UT regulate urine concentration, water retention, and sodium retention.  I focus on preventing the complications (hypertension and cardiovascular disease) induced by chronic kidney disease.

What do you like most about Emory? 
Everybody is so friendly here at Emory.

What is your favorite movie or TV show? 
My favorite movie is New Cinema Paradise.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to play with my children at the park.
