AI Resources from our 2024 FEED Conference

The Department of Medicine’s 2024 FEED (Faculty Education, Enrichment, and Development) Conference was a huge success with a record-breaking attendance of over 100 attendees. The half-day, CME accredited, virtual conference held on April 12, 2024, brought together leading experts from within Emory, presenting on various topics of the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI), including the current era of AI, how AI applies to teaching and research, and exciting and novel AI tools that are helpful for teaching and research. In addition to didactic learning through the conference, attendees also had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on activity using AI tools for teaching, as well as participate in an interactive case study to have AI help solve physiological or clinical problems.   • Zoom AI Companion for meetings: With the AI Companion setting enabled, during a live meeting a meeting summary (of the meeting) can automatically be created and sent to the host (and participants if that option is selected).
  • Sciwheel: Citation management software that offers the usual citation management tools, including organizing references, sharing citations with colleagues, reading, and annotating full text, and easily inserting citations into documents.

Key Themes: 

  1. Our AI Era: Highlighted the vision of Emory’s AI Humanity Initiative and the Center for AI Learning in advancing research, education, and applications of artificial intelligence. Additionally, the discussion included a presentation from the Woodruff Health Science Center Library that has a whole website dedicated to AI resources at Emory. 
  2. AI4Teaching: AI tools based on large language models (LLM) – such as ChatGPT and Bard – have the potential to upend the practice of medicine. Faculty play an important role in the appropriate application and stewardship of these technologies. This includes taking advantage of these novel tools to streamline the development of educational content and educating learners on best practices and pitfalls.  
  3. AI4Research: Presented ways Emory faculty are utilizing AI for research. Participants engaged in an interactive case study with a discussion on how to frame questions and parameters to have AI help solve physiological or clinical problems. The session further explored the translation of AI research into practical implementation, bridging the gap between research and operations for enhanced applicability.  
  4. Our AI Renaissance: From intelligent task management systems to ambient listening for note taking, AI can contribute to enhanced efficiencies – in the lab, in the clinic, in the classroom , and at your desk – giving you more time for the people and things that matter most.

Knowledge and skills gained from this education activity will change how I provide patient care such as using AI tools to generate letters for patients and providing information to patients at grade level. I will also use AI tools such as BioRender in my research and I will use AI tools to brainstorm for teaching.” 

I am more likely to explore ChatGPT when developing questions for tests or lectures. I also will change my Zoom settings to allow AI transcription. I also plan to reach out to some of the VA speakers in this conference about utilizing AI to pull patients for research.” 

I will use Doximity and or ChatGPT for patient interpretation of results. I also will use it for teaching. I look forward to trying Microsoft Copilot, as well as look forward to the day that I can use ambient listening for my notes. 

I plan to use Zoom AI, Abridge, Google Scholar, Chat GPT, and Doximity AI in my clinical practice.”
