DOM Staff Spotlight: Mary Pierre

Our next DOM Staff Spotlight is Mary Pierre, program coordinator for the Department of Medicine’s Office of Education. Learn more about our colleague below!

Tell us about yourself. Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York to Haitian parents. Life in New York City was filled with wonderful memories of being around family and becoming the person that I am today.

What is your professional background?
Before making my way to Atlanta, I worked for New York University (NYU) Medical Center for 12 years.  I began as a surgical coordinator and was an office manager before leaving for Atlanta. It was there that I began to hone my skills that prepared me for a professional career today. Before NYU, I worked at Brooklyn Medical Center as an assistant.

What is your role at Emory?
I am a program coordinator for the Department of Medicine’s Office of Education. This role entails being responsible for the internal medicine clerkships. We have two medical rotations (sometimes three) that run simultaneously (this takes skills!). As the coordinator, it is about keeping up with my current rotation while closing out the previous rotation and preparing the future rotations. It is a balancing act that I like to take pride in, especially with the multiple moving pieces. One of the reasons that I enjoy what I do is because it allows me to utilize my organizational and time management skills. In addition, this position has allowed me to build meaningful professional relationships with my coworkers, faculty, and students.

How long have you worked in the Department of Medicine?

I started with the department on May 16, 2016, but have been with the university since December 2010.

What are you currently working on? Any upcoming projects?
This is a busy time of year for us because we are preparing for the new academic year which begins on March 4. It involves planning for the third and fourth-year medical students. As mentioned earlier, there are many moving pieces, and I am glad to say I have learned to balance each and every piece. The team of directors (old and new) is one of the best groups of faculty I have worked with during my time at Emory. They often include me in the decision-making and give me autonomy to make some decisions which I most appreciate. This is the time of year when we meet as a team to look at the current year and how we can improve for the upcoming year. We are looking forward to the new academic year!

What do you like to do for fun outside of work?
During my spare time, I enjoy reading, going for long walks, and spending time with my family. Because we are a competitive family, game nights are often filled with laughter, talking smack, and simply being together.
