Researcher Spotlight: Jamie Lee Benjamin

Jamie Lee Benjamin
Clinical Research Coordinator II – Cardiology

What is your professional background?
I graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where I obtained all three of my degrees – a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Master of Public Health (concentrated in epidemiology), and a Master of Science in Biotechnology. My passion has always been science and research, and fortunately, I have had the opportunity to work as a Clinical Research Coordinator within Emory Structural Heart and Valve Center for the past year and a half.

Which division do you work in? Who is your mentor?
Currently, I work in the division of Cardiology at EUHM. My mentor is Dr. Adam Greenbaum, an Associate Professor/Co-Director of Emory Structural Heart and Valve Center.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
My work is focused on conducting clinical trials to treat patients with structural heart disease. These clinical trials gather data on valve replacement/repair devices and techniques used in minimally invasive procedures. We work with various Sponsors to obtain these heart devices in hopes of FDA approval for the treatment of Structural Heart patients on a mass scale. Our ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life of these patients with a less invasive approach, as they are typically high-risk surgical candidates.

What do you like most about Emory?
I really like the diversity of people and culture Emory has to offer. Being a minority, it’s always nice to be surrounded by various cultures, which has made me feel at home.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
I would definitely say I’m a critic when it comes to movies and shows – I love Pride and Prejudice (2005) and The Last Kingdom Netflix series.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy reading fictional novels, traveling/exploring, and dancing!

What is a fun fact about you?
I play the violin and flute!
