Researcher Spotlight: Hamid Yousf Dar

Hamid Yousf Dar
Post-Doctoral Fellow – Endocrinology

What is your professional background?
I grew up in Kashmir and completed my Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Kashmir University. Later, I joined Central University Sagar in India, where I received my PhD under Dr. Rupesh K. Srivastava in 2018. My research focused on investigating the effects of probiotics in modulating bone health via regulating the immune system in post-menopausal models of osteoporosis.

Which division do you work in? Who is your mentor?
I’m a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Lipids. My mentor, Dr. Roberto Pacifici, is one of the pioneers of osteoimmunology and gut microbiota research.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
My research focuses on the role of gut microbiota in osteoimmunology. I am investigating the role of microbiota in fracture healing and bone loss induced by hyperparathyroidism in mice and humans. In addition, our group studies the effects of microbiota on bone modeling and systemic inflammation in the context of Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy (GAHT). Our goal is to identify if modifications of microbiome composition could lead to the development of effective therapies for bone loss during hyperparathyroidism or GAHT, and optimize fracture healing.

What do you like most about Emory?
Emory feels like a home away from home. The diversity of people at Emory and my co-workers makes it even more beautiful. I also enjoy the collaborative opportunities here, which are very important for my research career ahead.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
I like watching the Yellowstone TV series, and spy movies like Mission Impossible and Bourne.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I usually go hiking and camping when I am not playing cricket or golf and try cooking and discovering new restaurants.

What is a fun fact about you?
I used to write short stories and poetry in high school. I also represented my state Kashmir in baseball nationals.
