2021 Resident Spotlight: Wendy Du

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I spent my formative years in the quaint little city that is Boston, Massachusetts, took a gap year in California with AmeriCorps VISTA, attended Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, and now I’m finishing up my America tour in the southeast with Emory! As an IM resident, I work at Grady Memorial Hospital, Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, and the Atlanta VA Medical Center.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in medicine?
Medicine began as a deeply innate desire to be able to help and heal those around me, but as I expanded my worldview and learned about the inequities and inefficiencies within health care, it’s also become a pursuit of understanding how I can best help my patients in multiple capacities.

How have your first few weeks of residency been?
These first few weeks feel akin to being on a roller coaster! I thought I was too old for all-nighters, but the ICU has proven me wrong. Some days, it feels like a big speeding drop where you’re just trying to hold on tight, but the train somehow always makes it back to safety with the support of my amazing team.

What are you most looking forward to during your time at Emory?
I’m excited to be learning from some of the brightest minds in the nation, getting to know my peers, and working with Atlanta’s incredibly diverse population!

What is your favorite thing about living in Atlanta?
I love how there are trees for miles!! And I welcome back the hilly landscapes of the east coast; it feels a little closer to home. I’m also a foodie and I’ve enjoyed exploring the vibrant Atlanta food scene.

Can you share a fun fact?
I’m a leftie who was converted at a young age, so now I write with my right hand, eat with my left hand, and have no idea which side to use to swing a bat!
