2021 FAME Grant Awardee Spotlight: Danny Eapen

The Department of Medicine FAME (Fostering the Academic Mission in the Emory DOM) grant program is designed to provide support for clinical faculty to dedicate up to 20 percent of their professional time to scholarly activity including research, education, mentoring, and quality improvement projects.

Get to know one of the recipients of the 2021 FAME grant, Danny Eapen, MD, assistant professor in the Division of Cardiology.

What is your professional background?
I am currently a general and preventive cardiologist primarily based at our Emory Saint Joseph’s campus. I completed my undergraduate and medical school education at the University of Miami in sunny, South Florida. I did the rest of my training here at Emory University SOM which included an internal medicine residency and a clinical research track cardiology fellowship (Quyyumi Lab). I also completed the Katz Foundation Preventive Cardiology fellowship (directed by Laurence Sperling, MD).

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Cardiology. My FAME and career mentor is Laurence Sperling, MD.

Tell us about your FAME grant project, why it is important, and what it means to you to receive funding?
Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic condition that is prevalent in our society, affecting 1 in 250 individuals. Those who have this condition have a 10-to-20-fold increased risk of developing premature coronary heart disease. Unfortunately, up to 80 percent of cases are not diagnosed or under recognized. The purpose of this project is to apply a validated machine learning algorithm (MLA) to our EEMR system to identify these vulnerable individuals and ultimately to engage with them for clinical screening, initiation, and optimization of therapy.

What do you like most about Emory?
The people. Emory is chock full of wonderful, inspiring, and hardworking individuals. I’ve had the privilege to be connected with, mentored, and influenced by many of them in both my training and professional career

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
“It’s a Wonderful Life” is one of my favorite films. The most recent TV series I thoroughly enjoyed was “Peaky Blinders.”

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spare time is my most precious commodity these days. It’s mostly spent with my two precious kids, Caroline and Andrew, and my physician wife (also super mom), Tina.

What is a fun fact about you?
I like to fix things. Home Depot runs are thus a staple part of my weekly schedule.
