2021 FAME Grant Awardee Spotlight: Kristine Vanijcharoenkarn, MD

The Department of Medicine FAME (Fostering the Academic Mission in the Emory DOM) grant program is designed to provide support for clinical faculty to dedicate up to 20 percent of their professional time to scholarly activity including research, education, mentoring, and quality improvement projects.

Get to know one of the recipients of the 2021 FAME grant, Kristine Vanijcharoenkarn, MD, assistant professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine.

What is your professional background?
I am an allergist/immunologist in the Emory Clinic. I completed an internal medicine residency and allergy fellowship at Emory.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I am in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, in the section of Allergy and Immunology. My mentor is Dr. Frances Eun-Hyung Lee.

Tell us about your FAME grant project, why it is important, and what it means to you to receive funding?
The SARS CoV-2 virus has claimed millions of lives around the world, with over half a million deaths in the United States. One of our best tools to combat this pandemic is in the form of vaccination. There are many patients who report an allergic reaction to the first dose of the vaccine, potentially precluding them from obtaining the second dose and reaching maximum protection against the virus. The project aims to characterize these first dose vaccine reactions and underlying patient risk factors, as well as to validate our vaccine graded challenge algorithm in helping these patients obtain the second dose of the vaccine. I am immensely grateful to have been awarded the FAME grant, which will allow me to help as many patients as possible obtain the second dose of the COVID vaccine.

What do you like most about Emory?
Having been part of the Emory community for more than 10 years, I am continuously inspired by my colleagues and the dedication to learning and excellence in patient care that I see here.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
It depends! But recently, “Stranger Things” and “Lupin.”

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love spending time with friends and family, and checking out new hiking trails with my Greyhound.

What is a fun fact about you?
Vegetables are my comfort food!
