Christopher Masi, MD, PhD, selected as DOM Vice Chair of Quality and Clinical Effectiveness

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce that Christopher Masi, MD, PhD, professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, has been named Vice Chair of Quality and Clinical Effectiveness, effective June 1.

In this new role, Masi will work closely with DOM leadership to organize and support the department’s mission to provide high quality clinical care and vision and leadership for quality initiatives across the department’s clinical sites. This includes establishing quality strategic goals that align with Emory Healthcare, Grady Health System, and VA priorities and identifying metrics that will evaluate goal achievement. He will lead the DOM Quality Council and ensure that the council’s initiatives/recommendations are prioritized and operationalized, and he will mentor department faculty on quality improvement projects. In addition, Masi will serve as a primary departmental resource for Sharing of Organizational and Unit Performance (SOUP) and physician incentive metric selection, including working with divisions/sections to develop new SOUP metrics.

Masi earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois and his PhD from the University of Chicago. He joined the Emory faculty in 2017. Since that time, he has served as medical director of primary care and has pursued research that focuses on chronic disease management and quality improvement. His work has been supported by federal, state, and foundation research grants. His current focus is on improving the health of populations, enhancing the patient experience, controlling health care costs, and increasing joy in medicine among providers and staff.

DOM leadership would like to sincerely thank Nathan Spell, MD, for his many years of service in this role. During his tenure, he supported the DOM in achieving high levels of SOUP incentive performance; mentored and supported many faculty and students with QI projects; led primary care antibiotic stewardship projects which resulted in winning a Georgia Hospital Award for Quality and Patient Safety for cutting in half the inappropriate use of antibiotics for upper respiratory infections; and provided faculty development and training for students, residents, fellows, and staff through the Emory Quality Academy.

Please join us in congratulating Masi on his new role. We look forward to seeing how his leadership and expertise continue to further the department’s dedication to high quality clinical care.
