The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce that Greg Martin, MD, professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, was elected president of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). The SCCM is the largest non-profit medical organization dedicated to promoting excellence and consistency in the practice of critical care. With members in more than 100 countries, SCCM is the only organization that represents all professional components of the critical care team. The Society offers a variety of activities that ensures excellence in patient care, education, research, and advocacy.
Martin has been actively involved in the SCCM for more than 20 years. He has served in a variety of roles and led a host of initiatives including serving on the Sepsis Definitions Task Force and the Discovery Research Network Oversight Committee, and as chair of the Data Science Programming Task Force. He has also served as co-chair for the 2015 Critical Care Congress, Strategic Planning Committee, and Research Network Task Force.
Martin is internationally recognized for his pioneering work in the epidemiology of critical illness and his seminal studies on improving patient-centered outcomes. He conducts clinical research in critically ill patients, particularly those with sepsis, the acute respiratory distress syndrome, and COVID-19. Martin is dedicated to improving the care of critically ill patients through cutting-edge clinical trials, fostering the development of innovative medical devices, and the application of data science to critical care medicine. He is the coauthor of more than 500 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, book chapters, editorials, and scientific abstracts, and he has given numerous lectures at national and international conferences.
