2019-2020 Chief Resident Spotlight: Cindy Ye

How did Emory’s residency program prepare you for your future career?
As a future gastroenterologist, the diversity and rigor of clinical training over the four hospital system has equipped me to work in a capacity with patients across a wide spectrum of circumstances. Additionally, the wealth of resources that Emory provides, such as the residents as teachers distinction or access to a diverse faculty for mentorship, helped me realize that I wanted to continue to work in the realm of academic medicine and continue to teach residents and students throughout my career.

What’s the biggest takeaway from your year as a chief resident?
Know if that things don’t always go as expected, it is OK. Be flexible and reframe expectations and outlooks as needed. And consequently, you may see some silver linings in a situation that wasn’t there before.

What is one piece of advice you would like to give to incoming Emory residents?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. No one comes into residency knowing everything, and you’re not expected to! Know that you are supported and everyone from your attendings to your residents want to help you succeed, so take advantage of that.

What will you miss the most about Emory’s residency program?
The deep sense of community that the residents have towards each other. 2020 has been a roller coaster of a year so far. But no matter what this year has brought, the residents always stood by each other. Whether it was sharing stories or getting together for happy hour over Zoom, they made the best of any situation.

What do you enjoy most about living in Atlanta?
The incredible food. Whilst many people outside of Atlanta may not know it, Atlanta is actually a foodie city. The diversity of people in Atlanta has transformed the food scene. Whether it’s traditional soul food, farm-to-table, or ethnic cuisine, there’s something for every palate.

What are your career plans for after residency?
I will be staying on as a gastroenterology fellow here at Emory!
