Researcher Spotlight: Simon Mwangi

What is your professional background?
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Zoology from the University of Nairobi (Kenya), Master of Science (MSc.) degree in Biology from the Laurentian University (Ontario, Canada) and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biochemistry from Kenyatta University (Nairobi, Kenya). I did my postdoctoral training at the National Animal Disease Center (Ames, Iowa) and at Emory University.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I am a senior research fellow in the Division of Digestive Diseases, where I work under Shanthi Srinivasan, MD.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
My research seeks to understand the protective effects of the neuronal growth factor Glial Cell Line-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (GDNF) against obesity and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). NAFLD has become the most prevalent chronic liver disease worldwide due to the global increase in obesity. There are few treatment options for NAFLD and obesity besides lifestyle changes. Lifestyle modifications are difficult to sustain for most people, hence the need to explore new therapeutic strategies.

What do you like most about Emory?
Its diversity and friendly work environment.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
‘Last Man Standing’

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Yard work, reading and watching sports (professional and school sports, male and female).

What is a fun fact about you?
I am easy going and love humor (clean).
