The 17th Annual IM Resident Research Day celebrates resident accomplishments virtually

Resident Oral Abstract Awardees (L-R): Jennifer Xu, MD; Annie Ho, MD; Grace Rim, MD; Natalia Smirnova, MD

For more than a decade, the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program has successfully hosted the annual IM Resident Research Day to showcase residents’ research achievements and celebrate the collaboration between residents and dedicated faculty. This year’s virtual event took place Tuesday, April 28 and featured resident oral abstract awardees at Grand Rounds, followed by the announcement of the poster award recipients.

The Resident Research Day Grand Rounds started with a keynote speech, “The Thought of High Windows,” from Bashar S. Staitieh, MD, assistant professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. Following his speech, this year’s oral abstract winners presented their research projects. Annie Ho, MD, presented, “Representation of Women Authors in Contemporary Heart Failure Clinical Trials.” Grace Rim, MD, delivered her presentation, “Fooled by Fibrinogen, Distracted by Escherichia Coli: An Unexpected Presentation of Purpura Fulminans.” Natalia Smirnova. MD, shared her research findings on, “HIV-related Viral Protein Exposure Impairs Alveolar Macrophage Mitochondrial Function.” Finally, Jennifer Xu, MD, delivered her presentation, “Providing Medications at Discharge Improved Readmissions Rates.”

There were 78 entries for Resident Research Day, including 37 clinical vignettes and 41 original research projects.  The following winners were selected through a blinded, peer review process:
