Department of Medicine hosts Hepatitis C symposium

Department of Medicine faculty recently hosted a hepatitis C provider training symposium entitled, “Hands on Hep C: A Practical Toolkit for the Non-Hepatologist.” The symposium was led by course directors Emily Cartwright, MD (Division of Infectious Diseases), Shelly-Ann Fluker, MD and Lesley Miller, MD (both Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics).

The goal of the symposium was to broaden the workforce of providers available to screen for and treat the chronic hepatitis C infection, the most common bloodborne infection in the United States. Participants gained practical skills and a toolkit to facilitate HCV treatment at their home institutions. The symposium was a great success, drawing attendees from across the Southeast, including Alabama, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

The event featured all of the faculty and clinical pharmacists from the Grady Liver Clinic (Sarah Koumtouzoua, MD; Jennifer Lom, MD; Natasha Travis, MD; and Francois Rollin, MD, MPH, (all Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics), as well as Joel Wedd MD, MPH, from Transplant Hepatology and Brian Pearlman, MD, from the Center for Hepatitis C at Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center.
