Dimitri Cassimatis, MD

I am pleased to announce that Dimitri Cassimatis, MD, associate professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology, has been named the Martha West Looney Chief of Medicine at Emory University Hospital Midtown (EUHM). In this role, Cassimatis will provide academic leadership and medical oversight and direction of the medicine services at EUHM and will be an integral part of the hospital’s leadership team, working closely with Jay Steinberg, MD, chief medical officer at EUHM, and Dan Owens, chief executive officer of EUHM.

Cassimatis’ roles and responsibilities will include being accountable for clinical and professional activities of the EUHM medicine service; overseeing the educational and scholarly activities of the DOM at EUHM, including providing mentorship for EUHM-based DOM faculty; ensuring that the educational programs for trainees meet the highest quality standards and education requirements; promoting research; performing credentialing functions and evaluating policies and procedures; working collaboratively with other hospital entities in matters regarding clinical performance, patient care, staffing, protocols, etc.; and implementing strategic goals of the DOM and EUHM.

Cassimatis has been a DOM faculty member since 2010. During his time in the department, he has split his time between EUHM and Grady Memorial Hospital. He serves as the director of the Coronary Care Unit at EUHM and co-directs the first-year medical student cardiovascular pathophysiology module at the School of Medicine, where he is a small group advisor. From 2016-2018, he was the co-director of the School of Medicine’s Harvey Society. Prior to Emory, Cassimatis spent 11 years as a physician in the US Army. He received his MD from Harvard University and completed his post-graduate training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

I would like to thank Byron Williams Jr., MD for his many years of dedication to EUHM and his valuable service in the chief of medicine role. We are extremely grateful for his leadership and the progress he made during his time in this position. Cassimatis will assume Williams’ responsibilities beginning April 1, 2020.

Please join me in congratulating Cassimatis on his new role. We are looking forward to seeing how his experience and leadership will continue to positively impact medicine services at EUHM.

Sincerely,

David S. Stephens, MD
Chair, Department of Medicine
