Remembering Paul D’Amato, MD, FACC

A teacher of medicine and life, a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Paul H. D’Amato, MD, FACC of Atlanta, GA, passed away peacefully in his home from Parkinson’s Disease, on August 31, 2019 at the age of 76.  Paul, an only child, was born in Washington, DC to parents August M. D’Amato from Sulmona, Italy, and Sylvia Hartman D’Amato from Proskurov, Russia (now Khmelnytskyi).

He graduated from Rutgers University (1965) with a degree in Bacteriology. From George Washington University School of Medicine, he graduated with an “MD with distinction” (1969) as well as finalizing his GWUSM residencies in Internal Medicine (1975) and Cardiology (1976).  In the early 1970’s, he was a General Medical Officer at USAF Hospital, Aviano, Italy, returning to the states as a Major. He also was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the honorary medical organization Alpha Omega Alpha.

As a well-respected clinician, researcher and teaching cardiologist, he went on to practice at the Wilson Clinic & Hospital (Wilson, NC), Ochsner Clinic and Hospital (New Orleans, LA) and under Emory University School of Medicine (EUSM) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC, Atlanta, GA). During the early years of Mercer University’s School of Medicine (MUSM, Macon, GA), he headed the Division of Cardiology. In 2000 he returned to EUSM, teaching Cardiology at Grady Hospital until he retired in June of 2011. Throughout his medical career, he most loved teaching his students and seeing them thrive.

His hobbies were reading anything and everything, medical history, art, travel, sports, fishing, teaching, gardening and driving his tractor, discussing history and politics with friends and shooting sporting clays. In the last quarter of his life, his passion for photography won him many awards, especially for his black and white photos of rural and rustic images.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl L. (Ellsworth) D’Amato of 51+ years, his two children, Wil and Noelle and three beautiful grandchildren. For a longer obituary on Paul H. D’Amato, please go to this website: CarsonBoyer.com.
