Highlighted Researcher: Ameeta Kalokhe

What is your professional background?
I am an infectious diseases physician and researcher. I completed an internal medicine residency, infectious diseases fellowship, and a Master of Science in Clinical Research at Emory. I also was a Fogarty Global Health Fellow at the National AIDS Research Institute in Pune, India.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Rollins School of Public Health Department of Global Health. My mentors include Carlos del Rio (Emory), Rob Stephenson (University of Michigan), and Seema Sahay (National AIDS Research Institute).

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
My research focuses on examining the intersections of gender-based violence and HIV. In India, it has focused on the development of culturally-tailored tools and community-based interventions to measure and prevent intimate partner violence. Domestically, it has focused on developing evidence-based strategies for the provision of trauma-informed HIV care and examining the acceptance and feasibility of community-based HIV care (i.e. mobile HIV care) to re-engage and retain individuals who have fallen out of HIV care. My research is important because it relies heavily on community participation, wherein communities impacted by violence and other trauma guide the development of the intervention, thus increasing its likelihood of adoption and future effectiveness.

What do you like most about Emory?
I love the people I work with, the opportunity to do something different every day, and the support I receive to continue my research abroad.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time with my husband, son, and family, going camping and hiking in the mountains, being in India, and traveling (without planning anything!).
