Staff Spotlight: Naquia Mitchell

Tell us about your role at Emory.
I am the assistant director of programs. I oversee the research and clinical demonstration programs in the Geriatrics and Gerontology Section of the Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics. I assist gerontologists and geriatricians on their awarded research studies and quality improvement projects as well as help with budget development and grant writing on potential funding opportunities. I work alongside the Department of Medicine division administrators, School of Medicine (SOM) financial analysts, and assigned RAS pre-and-post-award team. I also manage the section’s H-1B scholar requests and run the SOM Geriatrics and Gerontology Research Internship Program.

How long have you worked at Emory? How long have you worked in the Department of Medicine?
I have been working at Emory University for seven and a half years. I have worked in this role for almost two years.

How has the Department of Medicine helped you in your career development?
The Department of Medicine has helped my career development in many ways. I’d say my collaboration with different divisions within the department as well as working with other service offices like the Office of Research Administration and International Student and Scholar Services has impacted my career goals the most.

What do you like most about Emory?
I live in Atlanta, so the commute is pretty good. I also like the work-life balance initiative Emory has.

Any random facts you could share with us?
I’m obsessed with the Food Network channel!

How do you define success?
Being happy and proud with what you do.

Loyal, funny, and compassionate.
