Featured Clinician: Emily Cartwright

Tell us about yourself.
I was born in Las Vegas, Nevada but grew up in Rochester, Minnesota. Growing up, I was a competitive figure skater – after I “retired” at age 18, I began coaching figure skating while getting my undergraduate degree at Washington University in St. Louis. I met my husband during college and we had a long distance relationship while he was in Law School in Michigan and I went to medical school in North Carolina. After law school, he got a job in Atlanta and I matched in to the Primary Care track in the Internal Medicine residency here at Emory. We got married in 2008 and have two daughters (Nora – 4.5 years old, Julia – 3 years old)

Why did you decide to go into medicine?
I was inspired at a young age to become a doctor. Seeing people come from all over the world to get medical care at the Mayo Clinic made me want to become a physician and bring health and healing to people.

What does “clinical excellence” mean to you?
To me, clinical excellence means providing patient-centered care that is comprehensive, evidence based, and delivered in a way that is cost-effective and efficient.

Dogs or cats?
Neither – I don’t want to get a zoonotic infection (just kidding …my husband is allergic).

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love the arts – visual art, creative movement, dance and music. I enjoy having the opportunity to experience the arts now with my daughters.
