Highlighted Researcher: Bonnie Stedge

What is your professional background?
I am a third year Emory medical student. I have a BS in biology from Notre Dame. During my undergraduate studies, I was involved in research looking for mycobacterial virulence factors in an effort to find better treatments for tuberculosis.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
My mentor is Dr. Christopher O’Donnell in the Division of Hospital Medicine.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
Poor communication during transitions of care significantly decreases the quality of care and patient safety. This leads to increased hospital readmission rates, which increases healthcare costs and contributes to burnout. Medicare collected $528 million in hospital readmission penalties in 2017. Our research improves communication during transitions of care by mandating the inclusion of discharge summaries, resulting in decreased hospital readmission rates.

What do you like most about Emory?
Emory is full of faculty who take a sincere interest in my research and clinical development. I really appreciate the time and interest the entire Hospital Medicine group and other faculty at Midtown are willing to invest in me.

What is your favorite book, movie, or TV show?
My favorite TV show is The Office. I’ve seen that show way too many times.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like working on my short stories, playing violin in a community orchestra with my husband, and playing with my dog Einstein.
