Stephen D. Clements, MD provides clinical guidance and real-world cases in new eBook “The Digital Echo Atlas: A Multimedia Reference”

Stephen D. Clements, MD, professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology, recently published “The Digital Echo Atlas: A Multimedia Reference” – a first-of-its-kind imaging resource made up of extensive and innovative digital content. The digital resource is accompanied by a print book that provides expert clinical guidance and offers real-world cases throughout. The unique package is designed as a reference tool for cardiology fellows, cardiac sonographers, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and residents. It can also be used as a mobile teaching tool on rounds or in the classroom.

“The concept of this work came from the desire to share the images that we have encountered over the years at a large university hospital system,” says Clements. “We felt that from viewing these images much can be learned. They illustrate the physiology and pathophysiology of underlying processes that we encounter.”

The companion book features illustrations useful for quick clinical reference for case presentations, transducer maneuvers, American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) guidelines, abbreviations, fundamentals of producing an echocardiogram, etc.

Clements grew up in Woodbury, Georgia, and earned his medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia. He completed a residency at Grady Memorial Hospital and a fellowship in cardiology at Emory before joining the US Army Medical Corps, where he earned the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service.

Clements is board certified in cardiology and internal medicine and holds the R. Harold Harrison Endowed Chair in Cardiology at Emory University School of Medicine. He joined the Emory faculty in 1973 and has received several prestigious awards during his 44-year tenure, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia chapter of the American College of Cardiology. His research focus includes cardiac masses and tumors, bedside clinical cardiology, electrocardiogram (EKG) and physical diagnosis of the cardiovascular system, and more.

In addition to his academic appointments, Clements serves as the director of the Andreas Gruentzig Outpatient Cardiovascular Laboratory of the Emory Clinic, director of the Echocardiography Laboratory at Emory University Hospital, and a senior member of the Emory Clinic.
