Highlighted Researcher: Amit Shah

What is your professional background?
Starting from my undergraduate education, I studied at Princeton (AB in Physics), then the University of Pennsylvania (MD), Montefiore Hospital (Social Internal Medicine), and finished at Emory (MS in Clinical Research, Cardiology).  I then started working as a faculty at Emory in 2013 as an Assistant Professor. My clinical practice is at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, where I focus on prevention and innovation.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in Cardiology. My mentors include Drs. Viola Vaccarino, Arshed Quyyumi, and Doug Bremner.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
I am interested in translational cardiology research with regards to holistic prevention. This includes investigations to better understand how/why emotional stress is a risk factor for heart disease, as well as interventions such as biofeedback and cardiac rehabilitation. My work also includes the development of algorithms for risk stratification and disease classification, as well as the integration of health technologies into clinical practice. I believe these efforts will help in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

What do you like most about Emory?
I really appreciate the support of great mentors, collaborators, and students. I also appreciate the close proximity of the various schools and diversity of hospital settings, which promotes many types of research and clinical efforts.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
I recently saw Hamilton in the theater and was quite impressed!

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love spending time with my family and playing sports of all kinds. My favorite sports team is the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team (where I grew up).
