2018 FEED Conference – A Day of Education, Enrichment, and Development

Organized by the Department of Medicine’s faculty development office, the annual Faculty Education, Enrichment and Development (FEED) conference aims to help provide career advancement advice and workshops for clinician educators, clinical researchers, and basic scientists.

Nearly 50 faculty members attended this year’s conference on April 27. Aaron Lee, MSHRM, MBA, PHR, human resources administrator in the Department of Medicine, kicked off the half-day event with his presentation on “Setting Expectations,” focusing on supervisor and staff/trainee roles in performance management, setting and communicating expectations, and discussing ways to avoid common goal-setting pitfalls.

Following Lee’s speech, participating educators and researchers broke into multiple groups for targeted workshops, such as “Educational Scholarship 101, Communicating Your Science” (a research networking event), and “How to Debrief Your Team After a Negative Outcome.”

“The researcher breakout session on elevator speeches was so helpful and enabled everyone to learn as a group,” says a conference participant.

Kathy Griendling, PhD, R. Wayne Alexander professor of medicine, vice chair of research and faculty development in the Division of Cardiology, presented “Navigating the Promotions Landscape” after the workshops. In this session, Griendling addressed the new and old School of Medicine promotion guidelines and discussed the best ways to apply these guidelines with mocked promotion cases.

To conclude the conference, attendees divided into small groups for sessions on “Building Promotion Documents,” with hands-on guidance from session leaders on their specific documents, including CV, service portfolio, and teaching portfolio.

“Excellent sessions,” says a faculty member. “I am impressed time and time again with Emory taking care of its faculty.”

Other participating faculty members described the conference as helpful, practical and beneficial for their personal and career growth. “I learned so much! I recommend this conference to everyone,” another faculty member said.
