Emory Division of Hospital Medicine Hosts the Second Annual National Teaching Invitational

By: Monee Amin, MD; Mary Ann Kirkconnell Hall, MPH; and Meredith Trubitt, MD

On Tuesday, May 8, the Emory Division of Hospital Medicine (EDHM) once again hosted hospital medicine’s only National Teaching Invitational competition. This year’s theme was “Things We Do For No Reason,” as inspired by Dr. Lenny Feldman’s Choosing Wisely: Things We Do For No Reason series in the Journal of Hospital Medicine.

Seven junior faculty from different institutions each gave a high-yield eight-minute talk, with two minutes each allotted for questions.

The entire competition can be viewed below.

Co-hosts Drs. Monee Amin, MD, and Meredith Trubitt, M,D were once again assisted by EDHM’s Program Coordinator, Monica Perkins, who ensured that the Invitational ran smoothly behind the scenes. More than 70 attendees watched the contestants battle it out while teaching important clinical pearls.

Three illustrious judges had the difficult task of scoring the talks and then selecting a winner from the talented pool of teaching faculty:

  • Dr. Alfred Burger, MD, MS, SFHM, FACP, Professor of Medicine and Medical Education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Senior Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency at Mount Sinai Morningside/West.
  • Dr. Lauren Heidemann, MD, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan and an academic hospitalist at Michigan Medicine as well as the Ann Arbor VA Hospital.
  • Niloo Latifi, MD, Johns Hopkins University, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and the winner of the 2024 National Teaching Competition

The large Emory viewing contingent was thrilled when the VA’s very own Dr. Caroline Coleman won the contest! Dr. Coleman will now serve as a judge in next year’s competition. Keep your eyes peeled for a Save the Date for the May 2026 National Teaching Invitational!
