DOM Staff Spotlight: Careen Campbell Allen

Our next DOM Staff Spotlight is Careen Campbell Allen, Program Coordinator for the  Interventional Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine Fellowships within the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. Learn more about our colleague below!

Tell us about yourself. Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Jamaica and later moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, where I lived for several years before going to college in Maryland. I’ve spent most of my adult life in Maryland and also spent several years in Dallas, Texas. While I’ve been based in Maryland, Georgia is where my daughter lives and where my family plans to retire. So, when the opportunity at Emory came along, it was a natural next step. Since the role is remote, I’ve been slowly transitioning to living here full time and making Georgia feel like home.

What is your professional background?
I’ve had the privilege of working in a variety of mission-driven roles across different industries, including nonprofit organizations, legal education, and medical education. Throughout my career, I’ve managed complex programs, led strategic initiatives, and contributed to the growth and development of key organizational functions.

One pivotal role in my career was as Program Administrator for the OB-GYN residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. This experience provided me with an understanding of graduate medical education (GME) and laid the foundation for my current work at Emory. In addition, my most recent position as Manager of Diversity Programs at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) in Washington, D.C., involved overseeing strategic initiatives aimed at increasing diversity in STEM fields and supporting the development of future leaders in hematology. Similarly, an earlier role as Governance Manager at the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) involved managing key governance processes and collaborating with senior leadership to support strategic priorities.

Though my current role as Program Coordinator for the Interventional Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine Fellowship programs represents a different focus, it is incredibly rewarding. I’m able to contribute meaningfully to the development and success of these programs while leveraging my years of experience to support the fellows and ensure the programs run smoothly. I find fulfillment in the variety and impact that this role provides.

What is your role at Emory?
As mentioned before, I serve as the Program Coordinator for the Interventional Pulmonology (IP) and Sleep Medicine Fellowship programs. I handle a little bit of everything—scheduling, onboarding, and general program operations. I enjoy the variety of roles and the impact we’re able to make through the programs.

How long have you worked in the Department of Medicine?
I joined Emory in December 2024, so I’m still relatively new, but the experience has been incredibly rewarding so far. It’s a privilege to be part of a department so dedicated to excellence in medical education.

What are you currently working on? Any upcoming projects?
I recently helped with the Southeastern Critical Care Summit, which took place on May 9, an event sponsored by the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. Right now, I’m focused on graduation for our current fellows, as well as getting things in place for our new class of fellows.

I also just completed a major overhaul of both fellowship program websites, which was a big undertaking. I’m still fine-tuning some of the content and structure, but it’s been a rewarding process. On top of that, with the recent accreditation of the IP fellowship, I’ve been working on streamlining internal processes to ensure everything stays efficient and compliant.

What do you like to do for fun outside of work?
I love to travel and spend a lot of time exploring new places with family and a close group of friends. I’ve also recently gotten into landscaping—my daughter bought a property not long ago, and I’ve been helping with some outdoor projects there. It’s turned into a fun and surprisingly relaxing new hobby.
