In April 2025, the Society of Hospital Medicine, the largest professional association for hospitalists, awarded Hospital Medicine’s own Dustin Smith, MD, its premier educational award, the Excellence in Teaching Award. This honor recognizes individuals who “have demonstrated outstanding teaching prowess and who have served as role models and mentors to other hospitalists, residents, medical students, or other healthcare professionals.”
The Division of Hospital Medicine is thrilled (though not surprised) that the Society recognized the excellence of Dr. Smith, and many of his fellow hospitalists and support staff attended the awards ceremony in Las Vegas, NV, during the annual Society of Hospital Medicine Converge conference to cheer him on.
Dr. Smith has served in many important medical education leadership roles throughout his career, but he remains a dedicated teacher and mentor to a wide variety of trainees and colleagues. He teaches at the bedside as an attending on the Atlanta Veterans Administration Medical Center wards, as a classroom teacher for frequent conferences, and as an invited presenter for major regional and national CME conferences, and as an author of several well-received peer-reviewed medical education publications. His teaching and mentoring have previously been recognized with numerous local awards, and he is designated an Eminent Physician this year through our Clinical Distinctions Program.
