The Department of Medicine’s RYSE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council hosted the 3rd annual Health Equity Day on May 16, 2023. The department-wide event aimed to raise awareness and encourage action around the systemic health disparities that exist across racial, ethnic, cultural, and social groups. The event also recognized interventions and research across the department centered on health equity.

The virtual conference included poster presentations, a keynote address, and a narrative session. More than 180 members of the DOM and Emory community attended to share compelling new findings, facilitate scientific exchange, and identify opportunities for collaboration.

Special thanks to Keia Dodd and the RYSE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council for organizing this event! The RYSE leadership team would also like to thank all faculty, staff, and trainee volunteers for their assistance in both the planning and execution of this new departmental initiative.

This event brought stakeholders together from across the School of Medicine to advance equity and inclusion within our organization. Health Equity Day attendee Jennifer Christie, MD, AGAF, FASGE, Professor and Executive Associate Division Director for the Division of Digestive Diseases, applauded the event by saying, “We had a rich conversation during the Community, Advocacy, and Policy poster breakout session focused on advocacy initiatives such as the importance of providing support for lactating mothers in the workplace as well as making adult size changing tables available in clinics and other public places for people who require them. There is much work to be done to create equity for these groups and I was inspired by the passion and commitment the presenters and attendees displayed during our time together”.
