What is your professional background?
I am board certified in Internal Medicine and have completed two years of a specialized Women’s Heart Disease Clinical Research Fellowship at the Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute. While there, I focused on the diagnosis of coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) by invasive and non-invasive methods. Recently, I joined the cardiovascular fellowship program at Emory University School of Medicine to continue my research in gender differences in cardiovascular disease.
In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I am part of the cardiovascular fellowship program, Clinical Investigator Track at Emory University School of Medicine. I am currently working with both Puja K. Mehta, MD, and Arshad Quyyumi, MD, to develop new diagnostic tools to aid in preventing and treating women’s heart disease and coronary microvascular dysfunction.
Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
I became fascinated with gender differences in cardiovascular disease during my internal medicine training. It always sparked a question in my mind: why were women with symptoms of heart disease being discharged from emergency rooms without diagnosis? Why are cardiac symptoms in women different from men? I participated in the Women’s Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation (WISE) studies on invasive coronary reactivity testing to diagnose abnormal coronary flow reserve and endothelial dysfunction, as well as invasive diastolic function/pressure-volume loop assessments. I am interested in understanding brain-heart connection and eventually hope to prevent cardiac syndromes related to mental stress.
What do you like most about Emory?
Emory offers a wide range of research focusing on gender differences, so I am grateful to be a part of Emory’s cardiovascular research team.
What is your favorite movie or TV show?
My favorite movie is The Prestige and the Illusionist, and my favorite TV shows are Suits and Madmen.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like outdoor activities. I’m a 2 full-marathon and a 3 half-marathon finisher. I love playing soccer and our team won two local championships in a row!
