2021 FAME Grant Awardee Spotlight: Soroosh Kiani

The Department of Medicine FAME (Fostering the Academic Mission in the Emory DOM) grant program is designed to provide support for clinical faculty to dedicate up to 20 percent of their professional time to scholarly activity including research, education, mentoring, and quality improvement projects.

Get to know one of the recipients of the 2021 FAME grant, Soroosh Kiani, MD, assistant professor in the Division of Cardiology.

What is your professional background?
I completed an internal medicine residency, cardiology fellowship and cardiac EP fellowship.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Cardiology. Faisal Merchant, MD is my mentor for the FAME grant.

Tell us about your FAME grant project, why it is important, and what it means to you to receive funding?
My FAME project, entitled “Examining the overlapping syndromes of frailty and congestive heart failure in older patients undergoing cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT),” seeks to leverage the cardiac-specific nature of CRT therapy to tease out the overlapping manifestations of frailty and congestive heart failure. At the same time, the study will examine the role of frailty in affecting outcomes after cardiac procedures in patients with heart failure.

I’m honored to receive a FAME grant. This funding is critical as it will allow me to spend dedicated time pursuing this project, which I hope will provide the basis for work that will continue to elucidate the nature frailty and its interplay with cardiac disease, while helping sharpen patient-centered decision making in order to achieve better outcomes for geriatric patients at our institution.

What do you like most about Emory?
What I like most about Emory is that it reminds me of a big city with a small-town feel. It’s a large institution with leading experts across the board, but everyone I’ve had the pleasure to meet and work with has been down-to-earth and helpful.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
This may be the hardest question of all – it’s a moving target.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
These days, spending time with my family and friends.

What is a fun fact about you?
I am told, despite being a Millennial, it’s very hard to find a picture of me on the internet (I suppose if there is one in this article, that would change).
