Highlighted Researcher: Annie Massart

What is your professional background?
I went to medical school at Tufts University SOM in Boston, MA, before coming to Emory for my internal medicine training. I completed my residency in 2014 and transitioned to life as a faculty member in the Division of Hospital Medicine. Since then, I’ve been working at Emory University Hospital as an academic hospitalist.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the division of Hospital Medicine. Although I’ve been blessed to learn from many along the way, my primary mentors are Drs. Tracy Vettese, Daniel Dressler, and Daniel Hunt.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
I have a few areas of interest but most of my recent work has been on bedside teaching and bedside rounding.  There is good data that doing a thorough history and physical exam can usually get you to the right diagnosis for your patient. However, physical exam skills are increasingly underutilized with more emphasis being spent on often expensive and sometimes invasive diagnostic tests. This is particularly true for our trainees who don’t experience as much bedside learning as previous generations. Returning to the bedside and rebuilding our physical exam skills can improve patient care, education for our trainees, and bring the patient-doctor relationship back to the forefront of the healthcare experience.

What do you like most about Emory?
The people! As a hospitalist at EUH, as medical director of 6G, or as a teaching attending on wards, I have always felt like I was a part of an incredible team.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I spend a fair amount of my time baking. My colleagues, 6G nurses, and trainees are always kind enough to serve as taste testers. Otherwise, I try to make the most of my free time at home with my husband and our three dogs.
