Highlighted Researcher: David Guidot

What is your professional background?
I attended college and medical school at the University of Michigan. I then became a resident and chief resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota before completing clinical and research fellowship training in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine at the University of Colorado. I was recruited to Emory University in 1995 after three years on the faculty at Colorado and have been here ever since.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I am the Director of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, & Sleep Medicine, and mentor students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty members in my translational research program. My original mentors at the University of Colorado were John Repine, MD, and Joe McCord, PhD.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
My research is focused on the mechanisms by which alcohol abuse and HIV (independently as well as in combination) impair fundamental anti-oxidant and immune defenses in the airways and thereby render individuals susceptible to pneumonia and lung injury. It is a translational approach that spans cell culture, intact animal models, and clinical studies in individuals living with HIV and/or alcohol use disorders. I believe this research is important because individuals living with these chronic disorders are at extraordinarily high risk for lung diseases and collectively these problems cause enormous morbidity and mortality in our society. Our work holds the promise of finding relatively simple therapeutic approaches to enhance lung health in these vulnerable populations.

What do you like most about Emory?
I have been given incredible opportunities for professional growth as my career has developed at Emory and have completely exceeded even my wildest expectations that I had when I first came here 23 years ago. This is due in great part to my many wonderful colleagues and collaborators as well as the trainees and junior faculty that I have had the great privilege to mentor.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
My wife and I are currently hooked on Westworld on HBO, but my guilty pleasure is Pardon the Interruption (PTI) on ESPN.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I spend as much time as possible with my wife, Jane, and our two grown children. Our favorite place to get away is our cabin on Lake Oconee in central Georgia where we spend as much time as possible on the water.
