Highlighted Researcher: Qian “Elsie” Xu

What is your professional background?
I am a visiting medical student from Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University in Changsha, China. In China, my mentor is Dr. Guogang Zhang in the Department of Cardiology at Xiangya Hospital. Before working at Emory, I completed a clinical cardiology rotation in my hospital and also pursued basic science research.

In what division do you work and who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Cardiology and Dr. Kathy Griendling is my mentor.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
My project is about oxidative modification of cytoskeletal proteins in vascular smooth muscle cells during adhesion. Abnormal cell adhesion has been implicated in the development of vascular diseases.

What impact/growth has Emory had on your research, and what aspects do you plan to take with you to your future research endeavors?
During my two years at Emory, I have learned a lot, not only how to perform basic science assays, but also how to think about science. Moreover, the most important thing I have gained from working at Emory is developing a close connection with my mentor, Dr. Griendling. After I return to China, I will continue my research and hope to continue the collaboration between my lab in China and the Griendling lab.

What have you liked most about Emory?
There are many excellent research labs at Emory, and people are always willing to help. I like the nice people and the friendly lab atmosphere here the most.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
My favorite movie is Captain America, but I also enjoy the entire Marvel series.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I usually go to the gym. During holidays, I have enjoyed traveling around America (New York, San Francisco, and Miami).
