Highlighted Researcher: Julia Piwowarski

What is your professional background?
I graduated in May 2017 from Boston College with a degree in Biochemistry and Hispanic Studies.  During my years at BC, I worked as a Research Assistant studying antibiotic resistance and at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center studying the effects of chemotherapy on tumor progression and recurrence.  I also worked as an EMT at Boston College, as well as a Private Patient Care Assistant, until my move to Emory.

In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the division of Renal Medicine, and my mentor is the Dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Vikas Sukhatme.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
Our research is focused on investigating the influence of surgery on tumor recurrence.  We are interested in using various interventions during the peri-operative period that will make therapies more effective in terms of survival, primarily through modulating the inflammatory response following surgery.  This research is of the utmost importance because it has potential for providing patients with significantly better outcomes.  Also, it may suggest that these interventions increase the efficacy of other cancer therapies.

What do you like most about Emory?
The beautiful campus and weather have been great!  Since I came from Boston, it has been refreshing to step outside and not have to brace myself for the cold.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?
My favorite movie is The Words.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I’m a big runner, so that takes up most of my spare time.  I also love doing charcoal drawings, yoga, cooking, and hiking.
